Junior Campus Notices - Week 6, Term 1

KingsWay School —

Please read the following parent notices for the Junior Campus.

A Note from Jordan Barley

Here on the Hibiscus Coast, we live in proximity to an array of beautiful beaches and spend many hours in and around the water. Growing up with the beaches and ocean in our backyards it is paramount our students are knowledgeable of how to enjoy God’s creation, not only as caretakers of the environment, but in developing a healthy respect for it and understanding how we all can enjoy it safely.

Orewa Beach — Image by: KingsWay School

On the 18th February, our Year 5 students participated in our very first Beach Carnival Day. This was facilitated by the Orewa Surf Club, with the activities being run in front of their club rooms at Orewa Beach. This fun and engaging event focussed on some of the fundamentals of water skills and beach safety. The students involved will tell you that this day was one to remember – with plenty of activity and action to be had. The events targeted beach skills such as spotting others in need, searching and focusing on a target through beach flags and beach based squares; basic first aid, learning the recovery position and sending for help; Working as a team and good communication. Water safety sessions focussed on reading, managing and respecting the surf (we did have some small waves!) wading in the water and bodysurfing. We also looked at handling and using surf devices safely for self and others.

Thank you to Renee Beckett and her team at OBSLSC as well as to all the parents who helped us on the 18th and their willingness to get into the water to help make this day happen safely. Without your ongoing support these opportunities for our students would not be possible.

With feedback saying this day was such a success, we look forward to running a similar event for our current Year 6 children in Term 4. The Year 5&6 Beach Carnival Day is set to become one of our regular outings in the future.

Onwards and upwards,

Jordan Barley
Assistant Head of Primary

Grandparents' Morning

Grandparents' Morning — Image by: KingsWay School

Thank you to all the Grandparents and special friends who came to visit the Junior Campus students on Wednesday last week. We hope you had a wonderful time seeing where our young people learn.

Scholastic Book Fair

Scholastic Book Fair — Image by: KingsWay School

The PTA would like to thank the school community for your support of the Scholastic book fair held last week. This book fair was our biggest yet and thanks to your generosity the school has earned $5,000 worth of Scholastic rewards! These will go towards new books for the junior campus library and educational resources for use in the classrooms. A big thank you also to our wonderful team of parents who helped run the fair – we couldn’t have done it without you! 😃

Junior Campus Carpark

Top Carpark area:

Mornings: Parents are only to use this carpark in the mornings for dropping children off. Parents, please drive very slowing in the top carpark (5km), drive to the end of the drop off zone (don’t stop halfway if the drop off lane is clear), children are to remain seated in your vehicle with seat belts fastened until the car is stationery. Please do not allow children to take their seatbelts off before you have stopped at the drop off zone and are ready for them to exit the car. There are no pickups after school from the Top Carpark due to School Buses needing access. This is a safety issue so all parents must use the back carpark unless they are a disability cardholder.

Junior Campus – Back Carpark area:

It is essential parents drive slowly (5km) in the Carparking area. Parents are to park their vehicle (reverse into carpark space, where possible). Children are to use the pedestrian crossing. Parents are to assist their children in walking to the footpath to ensure their safety. When picking your child up at the end of the day, please wait for your child on the footpath and not in your car.

PTA - Ladies Night

The PTA are busy organising a Ladies Night (further details to come).
As part of this, we are having a pop-up used clothing shop. We are after donations of CLEAN, SALEABLE LADIES clothing, shoes and accessories items. Please leave at the Junior Campus foyer in the box provided. Please, no rips, stains or smelly items (or underwear!) 😊.
Thank you

Primary Netball Notice

Registrations are now open for Year 3-6 students (boys included) who would like to play Netball for KingsWay this year. Games are played on either Wednesday (Y 3 & 4) or Thursday (Y 5 & 6) afternoons at the courts at Edith Hopper Park in Manly.

Parents are encouraged to get involved and be a coach or a manager for a team. This may also suit an older sibling or other family member. Support will be given to those who are inexperienced or unsure about doing so.

Registrations close on Monday, 9 March. Any questions, please do not hesitate to email Raelene.Beguely@kingsway.school.nz

Full details can be found on the KingsWay School website - CLICK HERE

WEETBIX TRYATHLON – Entries are now open

KingsWay School has created a School Group for the local Hibiscus Coast Weetbix Tryathlon to be held on Sunday, 22 March, 2020. This event will be held at Manly Beach and is very popular for thousands of children across the Auckland area.

If you are registering your child/ren to take part, please select KingsWay to join our School Group, as it may mean that we are eligible to win prizes for our school.

Primary Swimming Zone Day

As has previously been stated, the Year 5 & 6 Swimming competition will no longer be taking place, in lieu of a Beach Carnival Day. We know that there are many capable swimmers in the Primary school and will still be sending a team to the HBC Swimming Zone Day in late March.

In order to qualify/enter the Swimming Zone Day, any Squad or competitive swimmers are please to send the official times of their strokes to Mrs. Beguely by 9th March.

If your child is not a Squad or competitive swimmer and does not have official competition times, but is confident and capable in the water and swimming regularly, then please also email Mrs Beguely by this date so that we can consider an option to allow these children to qualify. There is no guarantee that we will be able to make this happen but we will try our best to do so.

Please note that the HBC Swimming Zone Day is a highly competitive event.

Events are freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly (all 25 metre), and 3 x 25m medley (backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact:

Raelene.Beguely@kingsway.school.nz

Hockey - Years 3-6

I am the TIC (Teacher In Charge of hockey for 2020). My name is Alice Ng. I currently teach part time at KingsWay Primary School. Monica Coetzee (our previous TIC of Hockey) has passed this role onto me. I am pleased to let you know that this year our games will be happening at Metropark, Millwater WOOHOO ☺

Game times are yet to be confirmed however they will be on Monday afternoons, between 4-8pm (most likely).

I am currently in the process of organizing registrations so I need to know who is interested to play hockey this year. At the moment hockey is open to all Year 3-6 students.

Here are a few things you can do to help you decide if this sport is right for your child:

Ways in which you can help make this sport a success:

School Lunches

School lunches can now be ordered online and will be delivered to the Junior Campus each day before lunchtime.

When ordering food online for your child from the tuckshop, please ensure you put your child’s teacher’s year level and teacher code eg: 3DVA.
