KingsWay School —

A Note from Marian Bailie

In the Year 2 Ōwhanga, we focus on expressing and growing our creativity and God given talents.

Our precious children delighted in our collaborated Art lesson with one of the founding members of KingsWay School. Mr Graham Braddock is a well-known NZ artist and imparted some of his gems during this session.

Our Topic last term focussed on different occupations. As part of this, our students turned into chefs and each created a classic Kiwi toastie! Learning can be such fun! We practised reading a set of instructions to make and personalise a chef hat as well as the recipe instructions!

At the end of last term, our Ōwhanga enjoyed learning about Matariki. This is the celebration of the Māori New Year and begins with the rising of the Matariki star cluster. It is a time to celebrate with Whanau the coming New Year. To celebrate this learning the children decorated beautiful Matariki stars.

Activity Costs

Activity Costs are now due for Primary School students. If you haven’t yet paid your child’s activity costs, please attend to this as soon as possible or if you wish to set up payment instalments please contact Paula Southworth: paula.southworth@kingsway.school.nz at the Junior Campus office.

Parents of Prayer

We welcome all parents who would like to join our friendly Parent Prayer group to pray for our Primay School on Tuesdays at 9am in the Junior Campus Staff room.

Reporting an Absentee

KingsWay School has a responsibility every day to account for all students who are enrolled. In a large school, this is a huge task and we would ask parents to support us in achieving this. Please report your child’s absence before 9.30 am.

Reporting a Student's Absence for Sickness

It is a Ministry requirement to have a parent explanation of a student’s absence. This allows for the correct attendance code to be assigned. When your child is absent from school the school must be notified. You can do this either by:

  • 1. By emailing absences@kingsway.school.nz, OR
  • 2. Leave a message on the absentee line 09 427 0900 and enter 1 to leave your absentee message. Please state your name, your child’s name and class and reason for absence, OR
  • 3. Absences can also be sent via the KingsWay School phone app.

To download the app, go to the App Store on your Apple or Android device and search SchoolAppsNZ. After downloading, open the app and search for KingsWay School. Once KingsWay School has been selected, your app will automatically open to the KingsWay School platform from now on.

If you email a teacher, please also copy in absences@kingsway.school.nz so we can ensure the attendance is marked as soon as possible.

Not reporting your child's absence either before or on the morning of their absence will result in a phone call to follow up the absence. This is a safety measure. An answer phone is available 24 hours a day. Leaving a message saves our office staff considerable time as we follow up all unexplained absences. If the absence is for more than one day, please advise this in your message.

If your child is absent from school for more than 5 days due to ill health, a medical certificate is required. Medical certificates are important to justify absence from school due to illness.

Where there is consistent and/or intermittent illness the school can also request a medical certificate. If it is appropriate and your child is eligible, you could apply for support from the Northern Regional Health School.

Health Centre Notice

Parents/caregivers are reminded to please keep their children home if they are not well. This is a Ministry of Education requirement. Parents/caregivers, whose children come to school with a heavy cold, sore throat or flu-like illness, will be contacted and asked to take their child home.

Please practise and reinforce the following at home with your children:

  • Frequent handwashing with soap and water and drying hands well or using hand sanitiser.
  • Coughing or sneezing into a tissue and disposing of the tissue in a bin.
  • Coughing into the elbow.
  • Washing hands after coughing, sneezing and blowing the nose.

Nut Allergy Policy

There is a total ban on Peanuts or products containing peanuts in school. If you are bringing food to school to share with your child’s class, please contact your child’s teacher 48 hours ahead of time to let them know. The teacher will then inform you if there are food allergies to be aware of and will also alert the parents of the students with severe allergies to inform them that there will be shared food.

Children are strongly encouraged to NEVER share food and always wash their hands before and after eating

School Fun Run — Image by: KingsWay School

This year, we are running the School Fun Run fundraiser, alongside the upcoming Cross Country. We will need your help in setting up an online fundraising page for your child. Please try to do so over the weekend (it only takes a couple of minutes) then you can send the link out to your family and friends (even overseas) via email, text, social media, etc. and get started on fundraising. Your child should have been given a sponsorship booklet by their teacher to bring home. Please ensure that you read the attached file which has all of the info you need. Any questions, please email Raelene.Beguely@kingsway.school.nz

We are also hoping to run a fundraising event alongside the Year 0-2 Cross Country, coming up later in the term so keep an eye out for that.

Chess

What happens in a Chess Power Coaching Programme?

Each session starts with a formal lesson; all players will learn a new strategy, idea or skill each week. Then they put those skills into practice with activities and games. All games are monitored and supervised by the coach who provides individual feedback along the way.

Throughout the programme, we reward kids that do well and encourage and support kids that are struggling. At completion of the programme we recognise each child with a certificate based on their performance.

Visit our website, www.chesspower.co.nz and click Parents Centre

  • This is a 9 week chess coaching program running on Thursdays from 30 July 2020 till 24 September 2020 from 3:30 - 4:30 pm The fee will be $160/student for the term.
