Junior Campus Notices - Week 4, Term 2

KingsWay School —

Please read the following parent notices for the Junior Campus.

The “Talk-About-It” teacher (aka Junior Campus Counsellor) Su Fenwick writes:

Attention and support for students encountering challenges has been the traditional focus for Counselling in schools. However, at KingsWay our focus is broadened to ensure that children are supported in ways to flourish as well as in building resilience, self-value and empathy for others.

Within the conversations between your child and the Talk-About-It teacher, the focus is as much about recognising and validating strengths as it is about the challenges or worries they may have. As each child experiences themselves as valued they can, in turn, value others.

Friendship difficulties can be a common topic of conversation as our children negotiate their social world. Our children learn the value of being a good friend, what being a good friend looks like and why this is important.

Resilience building is a key area of growth for children. Building a Growth Mindset perspective, further developing gratitude and deepening positive values are foundational intentions in all conversations in the ‘Chatterbox’ (Counselling Room).

Having a proactive approach rather than being reactive, gives an opportunity for learning and developing actions and values that align with each child’s developmental stage. To this end, Su will be talking to class groups as well as to individuals, small groups, parents, and teachers.

Su is hoping to begin regular parent meet-up times in the near future. These will explore parenting challenges and topics of interest. A combination of scheduled discussions around a specific topic or book will be balanced with some more informal ‘drop-in’ times. These times and topics will be advertised through the weekly newsletter.
