We are so thrilled to welcome Jenny Harvey back to the Junior Campus after being on Sabbatical last Term. Jenny was welcomed back into her office with a tropical surprise!!

Note from Jenny Harvey

Dear Parents

It is good to be back at the Junior Campus!

My term away on Sabbatical Leave provided me time to carry out some research around Innovative Learning Environments and to enjoy some much needed R & R.

One of the challenges of Innovative Learning Environments (like our Junior Campus) is knowing how to best cater for the learning needs of our students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

My Sabbatical Research centred around what strategies other schools with such environments use and find most helpful in supporting students with ASD to succeed in their learning. I wanted to know about the approaches they have adopted, the systems they have in place and how they go about supporting their students on a day-to-day basis, with the goal of improving our practise in this regard, at KingsWay School.

I visited a number of schools in Auckland and Christchurch, speaking to teachers, Special Education Needs Co-ordinators, Deputy Principals and Principals – both from Christian and State Schools.

What did I find?

  • That there are so many educators around this country passionate about teaching children, working tirelessly to help them succeed.
  • That we, at KingsWay, have very robust, varied, personalised and detailed support in place for our students with ASD on the Junior Campus.
  • There is no proverbial silver bullet that fixes everything.
  • That students with ASD experience the most success at school when the staff and parents work together to support them.

Although I now have some new ideas to share with our staff, it was very encouraging for me to realise how well our Learning Support Department caters for our students with ASD. This does not mean that we will always ‘get it right’ or succeed with every strategy we implement. What it does mean is that we have very well-qualified, devoted educators who desire to see your children succeed and who appreciate that each child is unique, with different learning needs; educators who have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in this area and who work with the teachers and support staff to remove barriers to learning that make school a difficult environment for some of our little ones. The Learning Support that we provide on the Junior Campus is as good as the best of what I saw and heard about in the different schools I visited.

Apart from my research, I travelled to Spain, Italy, Croatia, the UK, Wales, Ireland and Alaska. The most significant experiences for me? Standing at the foot of the Colosseum; within reach of a Leonardo da Vinci sketch; sailing through Glacier Bay (Alaska), and swimming in the Adriatic Sea…. there are so many beautiful places in this world to see and visit. I am already planning my next trip! 😀

Thank you to the parents and staff for supporting Mrs De Gibson and Mr Jordan Barley who led the Primary School in my absence. They did an amazing job – so much so that I wished the Sabbatical Leave was 2 terms long and not only 1!
