Year 9 Work Experience Day

Nikki Clark —

Wednesday, 16 November

Parent Information

As part of our ongoing Health / Careers work, Year 9 students have an opportunity to seek work experience for one day on Wednesday, 16 November. The aim for this work placement is to see our students better equipped to make informed choices for careers and life. It is an opportunity for students to go to a place of work that is of interest to them and find out more about what it would be like to have a career in that field.

This is not the day to pick out the career your child will follow for the rest of their life. This is an opportunity:

  • To “take an inside look” at a workplace that may be within your child’s current field of interest.
  • To experience a day in the work force where conversations and encouragement can be offered and given from any significant adults in their chosen work placement.

Finding a place of work:

  • Parents and caregivers are the most influential people in a young person’s life as they consider their career paths. Your contacts can get them off to a great start.
  • We will unpack this in our Health lessons in the first few weeks back in Term 4 but please assist your child to find a place of work.
  • Be inventive and broad in the quest for a placement.
  • Try Facebook, asking friends, neighbours, extended family, work colleagues for ideas and assistance.
  • Students gain confidence in leaps and bounds when given the opportunity to select and make contact with their own work placement so encourage them to make that phone call or send an email!
  • The work experience must be physically and emotionally safe for your child.
  • Parents need to check their child’s arrangements and give their consent (the form is below)

If you as a parent /caregiver are able to host a student in YOUR work place I would love to hear from you. You may have an opportunity to inspire, motivate and delight a young person in a way that their own family cannot.
