KingsWay School —

A Note from Jordan Barley

Tena koutou,

Reflecting on our recent stint at home, I thought about how we, as Primary parents, engage with our children. My wife and I have three children this year at Primary. Through the recent lockdown, getting the balance right, at times became a real challenge. I found that as a parent, ‘task vs fun’ as a family became a tension. We found that the more we focussed on work/school specific task time, the more we would need to make sure we created space for intentional family time, fun and making shared memories. Paul the Apostle encourages us in Ephesians 5:15-17. He says:

"So be very careful how you live. Do not live like people who aren’t wise. Live like people who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity [or moment]. The days are evil. So don’t be foolish [and miss the moment]. Instead, understand what the Lord wants."

When we make time (Chronos time) and embrace moments (Kairos time), we are better able to be present and make the best of the time we have with our children. They watch us. They see us, in the way we role-model our responses and reactions in times of uncertainty or change. They relish opportunity for that quality time we intentionally carve out for them. They learn from us as we choose to set routines in place (for them and us) to get the tasks done. Although as parents we don’t always get it right, when we prioritise what is important, I believe that is what Paul was referring to as a wise approach to life. We want to thank you for your response and support of your children and their home learning through the recent lockdown period. We know parenting is not always easy, but we encourage you to intentionally create time to spend with your children, just enjoying being a family.

Naku iti noa,

Jordan Barley
Assistant Head of Primary
