Life Lessons through Sport

True Story written by Sarah Auld, Sports Chaplaincy New Zealand.

The Sharks basketball team are our local NBL team here in Southland, made up of local and imported players. One of the roles these players have while they are with the team, is to visit local primary schools. The players play games with the kids, talk with them and invariably sign autographs. For many of these children, it is an amazing treat to get to see in person the big basketballer they normally only see on the court or on TV. On one such school visit, one of the Sharks players, Brayden Inger, had a young boy come up to him and ask him to sign his booklet. Inger looked at the booklet and realised it was a school document used for children whose behaviour was becoming a problem in school. The booklet had a section for a teacher to sign each period to say if the pupil had behaved well and done what was required of him. Inger asked the boy to sit down with him and explain what the booklet was about. The boy explained it and Inger looked through it. He chatted with him and finished by saying to the young lad, “If you get this signed all week, and do everything you should do for the rest of the week, I’ll give you two tickets to the next Shark game”. The young boy was amazed and his teachers would later say that his behaviour that week was the best they had seen from him. He did all that was asked of him and he received positive marks and signatures all week, and of course he attended the Sharks game with his tickets from Inger. What is notable, is that the improved behaviour continued on past that week. This boy had someone he looked up to take time to talk to him and to believe in him and that one small interaction had long lasting impact on him.
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
