KingsWay School —

A note from Marian Bailie

In the Year 2 Ōwhanga, we focus on expressing and growing our creativity and God-given talents.

A real highlight for our students was welcoming our whanau into our Ōwhanga at the end of last term for ‘Show, Share and Shine’. Seeing the children proudly sharing their learning with their guest was a delight!

The Life Education caravan made its annual stop at KingsWay School this term. It’s always a highlight seeing Harold the Giraffe and hearing his message about healthy food, respecting those around us and learning about the largest muscle in the body, the gluteus maximus!

At the beginning of the term we took the time to focus on ANZAC Day and understand the significance of this day. From poppies to parades, medals and Gallipoli, we discussed it all. We developed our appreciation for those who have gone before us and the legacy they have left us - a beautiful, peaceful and free nation.

Our precious children delighted in our International Week where we celebrated each child’s culture and heritage. The outfits on display for International Dress Mufti Day were stunning. Our children had the opportunity to celebrate our diversity yet recognise that we all serve the same mighty God.

World Vision Youth Leadership Conference

Student Feedback from the World Vision Youth Leadership Conference they attended on Tuesday, 11th May.

Today Lucas and I (Isaac) are going to share with you about our experience at the World Vision Youth Leadership Conference that we attended on Tuesday, 11th May

We learnt about hunger and slavery but today we are going to share with you about hunger.

Here are some facts that we learnt:

  • There is plenty of food in the world, but some people do not have any at all.
  • In Sub-Saharan Africa alone there are over 239 MILLION starving people!!! That is enough to fill almost 48 New Zealands!
  • The average NZ household wastes about 3 trolleys worth of food a year.
  • 60% of hungry people are female. Everyone should be treated equally.
  • NZ income: 16% goes to buying food.
  • West Africa income: 55% goes to food!

New Zealand has done a few things for the hungry and homeless. In Auckland City there is a shop called Grates Free Store For The Homeless that is open every Sunday night and provides a little bit of free food for hungry people who are in need.

Another thing we learnt was this: “A hero is a leader who helps.”

So, we all need to be heroes and help the world!

PTA Cross Country Fundraiser – PRIZE DRIVE

The Primary and Middle School’s annual Cross Country run will be taking place in Week 9 of this term. It will take place on Tuesday 29th June at Shakespear Reserve. Primary children are already well into their preparation for this event.

Alongside this event, the PTA will be running a fundraiser similar to that which ran last year. There will be some slight changes to the format in that we need to source our own prizes this year. Are there any people or businesses in our School community who would like to get behind this fundraiser and donate prizes of any value to this cause? Or, do you have connections with people or businesses who might like to contribute? We are looking for small to medium value prizes that can be offered as spot prizes or larger ones that could be used as incentives for children to get behind this fundraiser.

If so, please email Raelene.Beguely@kingsway.school.nz as soon as possible. You will be recognized as a prize donor (if you choose to) on our fundraising website as well as in our school newsletter and Facebook pages.

Book Processing Volunteers

We have received 900 Phonic books (Early Readers) from the Ministry of Education that need a spine protection strip and KingsWay sticker put on each one.

If you are able to help apply protection strips and KingsWay stickers to these books, please email Linda Clarke, Resource Manager: linda.clarke@kingsway.school.nz. If you live locally, Linda can deliver and pick up or set you up with a Coffee and Nice Nibbles in the staff room at a time that suits you!

Marrzipan Drama

Self-Confidence classes at KingsWay - Space available for Term 2, 2021

Marrzipan have gained a huge reputation in New Zealand for the development of shy children, especially those with anxiety, autism and selective mutism. Saying that, this is a class for the super crazy and dramatic types too, as we focus on positive leadership and social skills. Our classes focus on inner and outer self-confidence and are super fun and exciting for children. Parents are kept up to date with weekly emails about what’s been covered in class and why, as well as what you can work on at home. We have two awesome showcases at the end of every term too, so you can see your child’s development first-hand as they perform in one of our termly productions.

Our classes will be running on Tuesday, at lunchtime in the Lower Studio (Totara Studio) Green Room. Spaces are limited to 10 students, to sign up for a non-obligatory trial lesson- please register your interest by emailing manon@marrzipandrama.co.nz or calling 027 2206030.
