Dear Parents,

The Board of Trustees initiated a review on the suitability of the teaching and learning spaces in the Junior Campus in September 2016.

The studios have now been in use for more than four years and it was a timely opportunity to review the teaching and learning outcomes for our junior students and the impact of the new learning environment on both staff and students.

Staff worked closely with Dr Howard Youngs (a Senior Education Lecturer from AUT) in 2017 to review their teaching practice and reflect on how better use could be made of the available space.

An evaluation of the physical space quickly established that there was a need to limit visual and noise distractions as well as to create greater flexibility in the learning spaces. The collaboration between staff and management, the Proprietor and the Board continued throughout Term 4, 2017, resulting in a design brief being provided to an architect and a series of iterations of what might be possible was refined over this time. Having reached consensus on a way forward, a project timeline is now in place.

Some of the renovation work will occur during term breaks throughout 2018, but the main work is sensibly being scheduled towards the end of the year, to avoid unnecessary disruption to teaching and learning programmes. This will also allow staff professional learning to continue in parallel, so that the 2019 experience will be rich for both teacher and learner. The Board and Proprietor are working closely to manage the significant cost of these modifications which will be an investment in the future of our children.

The agreed design (pdf attached) will be displayed in the foyer of the Junior Campus and formal opportunities for parents to ask question will be communicated in the newsletter.
