Senior School News and Notices

KingsWay School —

Please read the following news and notices for the Senior School.

This week we had the final Senior School Assembly for the year. We heard a few parting thoughts from this year’s Head Prefects (Jannick Henry and Megan Jones), followed by a brief outline of the general vision from the 2020 Head Boy and Head Girl (Angela Oh and Jonathan McGlashan). Several staff members commented later that they were impressed with what all of these leaders shared.

During this time, we also recognised some students who are worth acknowledging for their success or service. We started by playing a track from Caleb Braddock, a Year 12 student who creates electronic music and has had it played on George FM and recently featured in the ‘Sydney Festival’ during the October holidays. The piece we played can be found below:

Servant Leaders from Senior School

As a school, we continually aim to encourage character development and service orientation. It was so encouraging to hear that in the holidays, a small group of students responded to a need in the following way. They had a request from a staff member to help their elderly neighbour who had lost her husband a few months ago. They live on an acre section and the garden and lawns badly needed attention. The front of their house was so overgrown it was impossible to get a lawnmower in! Eight Senior School students turned up at 8.45am one day during the holiday break and worked for two hours until it was sorted.

The elderly neighbour was immensely thankful. The students were a real testimony to her as a non-Christian, witnessing with more than words. Their service started a conversation as to why they would give up time for her and who knows the impact this may have?

Business Studies Students

Two of the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES teams),  Refine and BagKeep, have made the top 8 in the North Shore region and will present on Friday night at Smales Farm for the chance to represent the region at nationals in Wellington. Refine members are Mi Rae Han and Saskia Connor (presenting) with other members Shannon Liddell, Courtney Jansen, Hellenna Messer. BagKeep members include Jess Bayman and William Prince (presenting) with other members George Shannon, Courtney Robinson, Jordan Healy. A third group also made it through to the finals but was unable to be there at the presentation stage. It is excellent to see such a high standard achieved by these students under Mr Cahill’s guidance.

Another Business Studies group, Akun (pictured at the top of this newsletter), met with Glenn Carter from Asian Outreach Cambodia on Wednesday. Akun made $680 profit from the sale of their moisturiser and donated this all to AOC to go towards building a well in rural Cambodia. Akun are Jannick Henry, Christian Wake, Andrei Jenner, Daniel Lamont.

Exams

As we move into the final stages of the year for Year 11-13 students, we pray every blessing over all these students preparing for their Final Exams.

Please read through the following details related to this.

Digital NCEA Exams

Parents, can you please ensure that your son or daughter goes to the link below to get all information they need for their digital NCEA exam and to have access to last year’s digital exams for revision.

Digital exams are taking place for Level 1, 2 and 3 English, Level 1, 2 and 3 History, Level 2 and 3 Media Studies and Level 3 Business Studies.

Students need to turn their laptops on in the morning before coming to school for their exam to ensure that no updates will prevent them from starting their exam on time.

Tutoring: Week of 4-8th November

Students are free to come in for tutoring for this week with their classroom teachers, but they need to let teachers know in advance (email them). The expectation is that they should try and arrange times when they would normally have classes before the study leave period.

Year 10 Exams

Our Year 10 students will be sitting exams next month, with one exam each day from 14- 19 November.

This is an opportunity for students, parents and teachers to measure what learning has taken place in their core curriculum subjects. Currently, in Hauroa classes, students are creating a study timetable, critiquing different studying techniques and also exploring stress management techniques. We see this as an opportunity to celebrate student learning and prepare for Level 1. It should not be a point of anxiety for students.

Students will be free to go home after their exam or may use the designated study space at school (buses run at normal times).

Parents please note: Please arrange with your child where they will go and how they will get home if leaving school at 1pm.

Further details will follow but students should be prepared for the following exams

  • Thursday 14 November - English Examination

  • Friday 15 November - Social Studies Examination

  • Monday 18 November - Science Examination

  • Tuesday 19 November - Maths Examination

This is an important part of our curriculum that builds on life-skills, careers and character focus that we integrate throughout the year. More information about this will be sent to all Year 10 parents, including permission forms. Refer to the calendar below for dates and overview of activities.
