The Value of Participating in The Arts at KingsWay School

KingsWay School —

An update from Graeme Budler on growing the Arts Programme at KingsWay School.

I have been asked by several parents in the past why KingsWay places such an emphasis on the arts. Parents want to know how the arts prepare students for the world of work. To answer the question, I look back on my academic career and consider what fields of study benefited me the most. While studying for a career in teaching, I had the option of choosing a compulsory specialisation in either counselling, physical education or drama. The physical education course was fully subscribed, I had no interest in counselling, so I defaulted to drama. Somewhat reluctantly, I attended my first classes as I never desired to ever be a drama teacher. However, it was not long before I realised that I was about to be thrust out of my comfort zone. During the next two years, I grew in my knowledge of engaging students in drama, but more significantly, I changed. I grew in confidence and learnt several enduring life skills that I still call on regularly. I never ended up teaching drama, but I am thankful that I took drama because it profoundly impacted who I am today.

The KingsWay School leadership is committed to growing the Arts Programme. This investment is well established in the middle and senior years, but now we focus on the primary years. From Term 4, we will introduce a new arts programme into the Primary School. A Director of Arts leads this programme, with all primary students receiving dedicated exposure to the arts every week. There will be both paid and unpaid options during these times, with parents choosing based on their child’s interests, aptitude and financial capacity. Teachers will continue to offer free programmes but will operate out of their area of strength rather than teach all aspects of Art’s curriculum. This opportunity also allows many passionate parent and community volunteers to share their expertise with our students. The Arts Director will establish the programme in Term 3 and launch things in Term 4. I cannot wait to witness the ongoing growth and development of this area of the curriculum.

Another exciting development attached to this area is the proposed Performing Arts Centre. This building is expected to be up and running, financially dependent, in 2025. This facility will further enhance the capacity of Arts’ programmes. Next year, we also hope to host arts’ evenings at all levels to provide more opportunities for students to showcase their learning.

Finally, I want to encourage you to buy tickets for the upcoming Senior School production of Aladdin if you have not done so already. I have booked for two nights and can guarantee that this night out will be well worth the money.
