Teachers Strike affecting Sports

Please encourage your children to attend all trainings and games throughout the upcoming teacher strikes, even if students are not attending school that day. College Sport, which is the organisation that facilitate school sport will continue to run a full calendar of events during the ongoing industrial action.
If our students do not turn up then this leaves the team short of players and we may have to default, which not only affects our team but the opposition school, referees & administrators.

Results

Senior 1 Netball

On Saturday, 10th June the Senior One Netball team came up against Takapuna Grammar to take a dominant win, 26-12, in their second game in the Open B grade. Everyone played incredible individual and team games, with intercepts being made throughout the court. With the score 10-8 to KingsWay at half time, the girls played their absolute hearts out the in the second half, scoring an outstanding 16 more points and halting the opposition to only 4 points. Arahina, having just come back from injury, played a stellar of a game and told the girls with her verse before the game to always wait on the Lord. The team applied this in every quarter and continually played for the glory of God. As always the support on the sideline uplifted the spirits of the girls, with encouragement following every pin-point pass, successful goal and impressive intercept. This game shows the growth of the team as we continue to grow stronger as a unit.

1st XI Boys Hockey team

The KingsWay 1st XI Boys Hockey Team played Albany Senior High School 1st XI this week, with the final score being a 5-0 win. After having multiple players back from being sick, the team played significantly better, shutting down the opposition and keeping them away from goal for much of the game. KingsWay’s many near misses when shooting are not reflected in the score and it could have easily been a much higher scoring game. Franki Thompson scored a hat-trick with James du Preez and Dan Harrison scoring one each. Overall, KingsWay played well as a team, and it was a very enjoyable game.

Balance is Better

When you think back to when you played sport as a youngster, what were the things that stood out to you? What do you remember as the key factors that got you into sport in the first place – and kept you playing sport?

The answer probably varies for everyone. For some it might be the skills they learnt just by participating in a sport – both the technical, sport-specific skills and life skills they could apply in school and other areas of their life. Some might remember the lifelong friendships they formed, while others have been inspired to give back to the community by stepping up to become a coach, support their club, or be a community leader.

Whatever it is that got you going and kept you going, it’s important to remember that the big wins in sport aren’t just on the scoreboard. The real value of sport is the role it plays in the wellbeing and overall development of our tamariki and rangatahi. When everyone in the sport system, such as administrators, managers, coaches, and parents work together, they can deliver quality experiences that enable young people to stay in sport for life, experience the value that sport offers, and reach their potential in sport at the right time. And that’s what the Balance is Better philosophy is all about.

Today, Sport New Zealand launched The Big Wins, a digital promotion celebrating the big wins that really matter to our young people in sport. There are three big wins called out which focus on building bonds for life, seeing our young people’s skills develop both inside and outside of sport, and when they give back.

Check out the promotion landing page on the Sport New Zealand website, which has informative articles and videos for inspiration (including a feature on one of our very own Balance is Better Champions ). Take the time to explore the content and consider how it aligns with Balance is Better, the impact sport can have on young people, and how you can use the learnings to create even more quality sporting experiences. You will also be able to spot the promotion on social media and digital advertising from today.

The big wins aren’t just on the scoreboard. Let’s make sure young people take away all the benefits of participating in the sports they love.
