College Sport Cross Country

Last week we had two students representing KingsWay in the College Sport Cross Country North Western Zone event. Mac Green and Madison Owen did very well. They raced against the top 24 runners from all North Harbour and West Auckland schools. Madi came in 6th and Mac came in 10th.
Both runners qualified to go on and compete in the Auckland wide College Sport event.
Both students have been involved with the KWS running club over the past two years.

1st XI Girls Football

The Kingsway X1 Girl’s football team played against Mahurangi. The final score was 4-2 win for us which was exciting since it was the first game of the season! Mia Irons scored two goals and Charlie Smith scored the other two. It was a good game we all played really well as a team, we were doing on the pitch everything we were practicing in training. Maddie received player of the day because of how she tried so hard the whole game and never gave up. My highlight of the game was when we scored the final goal to keep ahead of Mahurangi. Overall the game was a really great start to the season for the team.

Real Life Lessons through Sport

By Sarah Auld, Sports Chaplaincy New Zealand

As a teenager, Tim Tebow, was seen as one of the best high school footballers in America. As a quarterback he was known for his intense competitiveness and impressive running and throwing abilities. In his senior year at high school he was named an All-State, Florida’s Mr Football, an All-American and Florida’s Player of the Year. Tebow was educated at home by his parents but under state law qualified to play for the local high school. His local high school was Allen D. Nease High School that had a struggling football programme at the time. Tebow joined the football team and as a junior he was a standout. In his senior season, he led his high school team to a state title. When Tebow talks about his high school team and the coaching he received there, he speaks of how the coach focused on much more than just their development as football players. The coach was intentional about developing their character. He had three basic rule which he said he expected all of his players to adhere to and they had nothing to do with football skills. Those three rules were: Do what’s right. Do what’s best. Treat everybody the way you want to be treated. That high school coach realised that if his players followed these rules and developed good character, then everything else would be easier. For Tebow who had a strong personal faith, that mindset suited him well and it is one he has maintained throughout his career.
Bible verse: Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways. Proverbs 28:6

Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.  R.J. Palacio
