World Vision 40 Hour Famine

There was a rising buzz of activity throughout Term 2 as students geared up for KingsWay’s annual World Vision 40 Hour Famine, 1st-3rd July.

This year, the focus was clean water – something we all take for granted, yet is so critical and precious. The goal was to raise at least $25,000 for communities that lack this life-giving asset. Along with individual fundraising and a mufti day sporting the famine’s distinctive orange, each area of the school developed its own activities – some new initiatives along with proven faithfuls.

Children in the Junior Campus quickly caught the vision, and the Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils used their artistic talents, designing posters to advertise the famine. Younger children participated in the ‘Chores for Change’ fundraiser, whilst older ones signed up to the KingsWay fundraising page. Lunchtime movies and a Trivia Quiz topped off the activities.

On the Senior Campus, students found email to be an effective means of garnering support for challenges. Goals were set and tallies mounted. Expectations grew as goals were met, many exceeded. Community generosity coupled with youthful enthusiasm is a powerful mix. A sports competition had many Middle School students excited, whilst the Junior Secondary decided to go all out and organise a World Vision Bazaar for one lunchtime. World Vision colours decorating Te Kainga set the vibe for mass fun, games, and buying and selling.

As the Senior School competitive spirit grew between classes, so did more fundraising opportunities. Friday 1st July was manic – mufti day, fun run, quiz night, and to cap it off, an early rise Saturday morning for the Walk for Water, a 16 km walk from Gulf Harbour back to KingsWay. The 6km fun run, aka the annual cross country, mirrored the average distance a child in Malawi needs to walk daily for water. Quiz Night stretched 130 brains as tables vied for ascendancy. Who would guess there would be a three-way tie after ten rounds? A final playoff question settled the cliffhanger. The 5am start for the Walk for Water got the blood pumping for the hardy souls involved, as they welcomed a glorious winter’s morning.

A big thank you to all who have sacrificed for KingsWay’s 2022 Famine; whether you have donated or signed up. Together, you have taken up the challenge of providing greater accessibility to clean water, a just cause that resonates with the heart of God. Who knows what opportunities may arise for the recipients in the future to find the ‘living water’ spoken of in John 4:10?

At the end of Term 2 the total amount raised for the World Vision 40 Hour Famine was a huge $27,143.00!
