KingsWay Missions

Tonga Mission Team - Boot Camp 1  by KingsWay School

KingsWay Missions is looking forward to a season of momentum in what we are doing well and adding new, exciting events and trips to our calendar for the future. We are pleased to have two overseas mission trips this year: Tonga in July and Cambodia in December.

Mission 101 and Boot Camps

Both student teams have been meeting in the Wider Learning slot and doing a Mission 101 course to prepare for the trips. In addition, the Tonga team had a boot camp in the middle of Term 1 at Northcross Church. This proved to be a wonderful time of learning, team bonding and connection. Thank you to Melanie van Rooyen, Wayne Strydom and Andrew Marriott at MotiVate NZ for running the boot camp.

Kids Connect Day Camp

In March, six Year 9 students attended a day camp called Kids Connect. This camp is set up by Elevate Disability Trust (in partnership with Children’s Bible Ministries) and caters for children with physical or intellectual disabilities or impairments. The students were ‘buddies’ to campers and did various fun activities with them. It was an opportunity for them to see that despite an impairment in someone’s body, it doesn’t affect their spirit and that everyone can have a relationship with God.

The camp’s theme was “Diggin’ It’ and was a day of exploration through a variety of fun events and large group teaching. The student’s role was to offer their buddy additional support when required so they could fully participate in a range of different activities.

Throughout the day, it was great to see our students being pushed out of their comfort zones as they supported and worked alongside their buddy for the day.

Thank you to Sue Morris and De Gibson, who went along as adult helpers.

Raising Funds

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Tonga Mufti Day.
We raised a huge amount of $5121.90!

  • Junior Campus: $1867.80
  • Senior Campus :$3254.10

The funds will be used to complete the Tonga Christian Radio buildings and to purchase a new antenna mast.

Radio Rhema and Learning to Broadcast

On Monday, 27 March, as part of Wider Learning, and leading into the Tonga Missions trip in July this year, 13 of our students went to Radio Rhema in central Auckland to experience what an operational radio station is like. This trip was organised by MotiVate - MVNewZealand, led by Andrew Marriott, who provides a partnership with Tonga Christian Radio.

At the studio, they saw the various areas which make broadcasting a success, from sitting in the live studio to being given a tour of the facilities. They spoke with current Rhema presenters including former KingsWay student Josh Coombridge. Three of our students, Andrew, Arahina and MacKenzie, even read the weather in the studio.

In July, the students will depart for Tonga to be part of the formal opening of the new building for Tonga Christian radio station and to celebrate its’ 30th Anniversary. This will be a prestigious event, attended by HRH Princess Mele Siu’ilikutapu and (her daughter-in-law) Lady Maasi Kalaniuvalu.

The Tonga Mission students have been tasked with producing content for the station as well as putting together skits and songs which will be performed in churches and schools.

Servant leadership will be put to good use when they get involved in helping the community when called on to do so and even gardening to spruce up the grounds around the radio station.

TONGA CHRISTIAN RADIO BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The Princess’ uncle was HM King Taufa’ahau (George) Tupou IV, who had the vision for the station after visiting Radio Rhema in 1988, and her father was Prime Minister Tui Pelehake, who granted the first license to broadcast in 1988.The first broadcast was made on 4 July 1993, the birthday of HM King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV.More information can be found at www.tcrfm.org/about-us
