Focus on a Programme - Primary Sport “Give It A Go” Programme

    by KingsWay School

It has been an exciting term at the Junior Campus because we have launched our new initiative, the Primary Sport “Give It A Go” Programme. This is for all students in Years 3 to 6 and runs each week either on Wednesdays (Years 5 & 6) or Fridays (Years 3 & 4).

Outside providers deliver most of the programme, although KingsWay staff, alumni and students also offer options. During Term 1, we have had coaches from North Harbour Softball, North Harbour Rugby, North Harbour Hockey, Hibiscus Coast Football, and Kelly Sports, plus Year 6 teacher Mr Rush and Sports Director, Mrs Hay, taking sessions. Teachers are allocated to each group to assist with supervision and are encouraged to be actively involved. Sports offered will change from term to term giving children plenty of options throughout the year. We also have access to the COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area) and the Events Centre on the Senior Campus, as space is limited at the Primary.

It is hoped that, by giving children an opportunity to play and learn different sports throughout the year, they can make a more informed decision about those they might want to play in a more formal setting, i.e., registering for a KingsWay or a club team in a weekly competition. It is also a way for children to improve their physical skills and confidence in a sporting environment and to honour God with other talents.

Observing the children coming out to the programme each week with excitement and enthusiasm has been great. It has also been fantastic to see them meeting and making friends from other classes and year levels, and building a strong community which happens so naturally through sport.

The biggest challenge is the inclement Auckland weather, which the Year 3 and 4 students experienced when heavy downpours arrived during the first two weeks of the programme. They all know now that we will carry on rain or shine, so send them well-prepared for any weather. They will learn more than just sport, such as grit, resilience, teamwork, and perseverance.

As the premise for the programme is “Give It A Go,” children are encouraged to try something they have never done before or have little experience in rather than just choosing a sport they have played for years. Hopefully, in years to come, this will translate into numerous KingsWay and local community club teams full of our students engaging in and enjoying sports.
