KingsWay students have achieved significantly higher results in all aspects of NCEA compared to both Decile 8-10 schools and national results.

Both our Level 3 and University Entrance achievement is once again very high, Level 3 achievement being 18% higher than Decile 8-10 schools, helping to ensure that options are kept open for future pathways for students. One of the aspects to note about this is that not all students were aiming for UE, as many KingsWay students pursue other pathways that do not require UE and therefore may not select a course with UE subjects.

The graph above also shows that Level 1 NCEA pass rates are significantly higher (over 20% higher) than both the national average and Decile 8-10 comparatively. Likewise, there is almost 20% difference between NCEA Level 2 results nationally and over 10% difference between Level 2 NCEA results and the Decile 8-10. These strong results are a testament to staff and students' resilience and adaptation to online modes of learning. They are also in large part due to the consistent and responsive way that students were tracked throughout the year. As in previous years, priority learners and those who appeared to be at risk of not achieving were followed up initially by classroom teachers, then Deans and SMT. Appropriate support was put in place, where possible, dependent on Covid related restrictions.

We are very proud of both our staff and students for their perseverance and hard work in 2021.

NCEA Excellence Endorsements

KingsWay’s Cohort achieved a significantly higher proportion of excellence endorsements than both the Decile 8-10 and the national average across all levels.

The results from 2021 in terms of NCEA endorsement are very pleasing. KingsWay is well above comparable decile 8-10 schools and national averages across all NCEA levels. Despite the disruptions caused by Covid, our teaching and learning programmes were well established and programmes were effectively adapted to online learning. Staff were able to quickly pivot to distance learning through Teams which meant student achievement was not compromised. On the gradual return to school in late 2021, we created a highly flexible and adaptable learning timetable. This maximised learning in specific subjects to meet individual needs and allowed greater time spent in certain subjects for students to catch up.

Staff should be highly commended for their professionalism and dedication to getting all students across the line and pushing for the highest achievement levels. The Unexpected Grade Events (UEG) put greater pressure and emphasis on work done internally in school subjects. Students’ ability to make the most of these UEG’s is a testament to the outstanding work done by our teachers, as the marking load associated with them was significant.

Value Added from Level 1 to Level 3

KingsWay has added more value to our students over the last three years than Decile 8-10 schools and the national average despite having a higher starting point in Level 1.

As can be seen in the graphs above, significant value has been added from Level 1 to Level 3, even though our pass rates at Level 1 were extremely high, being 11% higher than Decile 8-10 and 20% higher than the national average. As can be seen in the table, the value-added from Level 1 to Level 3 in terms of pass rates at KingsWay is 7.7% whilst Decile 8-10 has only seen a 1.3% increase and national schools show a decrease.

One might not expect to see much increase in percentage pass rate as the students progress through Level 1-3, so we are particularly proud of this. In addition to the effort of the students and staff, an aspect of this success might be attributed to careful guidance around the suitable subject selection to enhance students’ success.

We are extremely proud of our staff and students for showing such resilience in a tough COVID disrupted year and for achieving such outstanding results.
