Primary Arts Programme by KingsWay School

Focus on a Programme - Primary Arts

It has been a busy and exciting term at Primary, kicking off our new Arts Programme in week four. This programme immerses each child in a range of dance, music, and drama classes rotating throughout the year, further enriching their well-rounded learning experience at KingsWay School.

Year 0-2 Programme

Every Tuesday afternoon, our youngest tamariki excitedly split off into their different options. In our junior dance classes this term, students have been learning Hip Hop, Samoan Sasa and Creative dance. In our music classes, students have been learning one musical skill of either ukulele, piano, or choir. In the junior drama classes, children have been enjoying learning musical theatre and performance skills. Year 0-2 students spend one term learning one option before trying something new.

Year 3-6 Programme

Every Thursday afternoon, the Year 3-6 students split off into their different options. In our senior dance option, Year 3-6 students have been learning a range of different styles such as Hip Hop, creative dance, barn dancing and Samoan Sasa. In our music programme, students have been learning one musical skill of either piano, choir, ukulele, or percussion. In the senior drama programme, children learn musical theatre and the skills to perform and showcase their work. Year 3-6 students spend two terms in one option, allowing them the time to fully engage in rich learning.

The aim of the Primary Arts Programme is to offer variety to students, giving them the opportunity from a young age to discover what they are passionate about. Not only are they building practical knowledge and creativity, but they are finding out how that can be used for the glory of God.

It has been a joy to see the students dive head-first into this programme, embracing the opportunity to learn new skills in the arts. All teachers, staff and external tutors have launched this programme with such enthusiasm and energy in what has been a whirlwind of a term. I have been so impressed with the children’s adaptability and willingness to give things a go, moving beyond their comfort zones and becoming more confident within themselves. I am eager to see the programme grow throughout the year and students having more opportunity to express themselves through the arts.
