The Value of Participating in The Arts

Music has always been a hive of activity, and 2021 has been abuzz with various performances, ensembles and classroom activities. As a vital part of our connection with God, music has an integral role to play in our lives, and as the natural abilities of our students are unlocked, it is exciting to see how God’s name is glorified.

As the classroom teacher for Year 7 right through to Year 13, it has been wonderful to see the students engage with the learning environment. Right from the onset, students are exposed to music technologies through online and school-based music software programs to help create their own compositions, performing music as soloists or in a group, and finally learning about the language of music.

There are numerous ensembles rehearsing weekly in preparation for performances. The worship bands have been busy leading Senior School worship times, and most recently, the Community Prayer and Worship Evening. Thank you to Amber-Leigh Strydom for her leadership of the Senior School worship band.

Up and coming events in Term 3 include the orchestra and jazz band performing as pre-show entertainment in the foyer for the Senior School production of “Aladdin” and on stage at the Arts Showcase week held on 22 September at Centrestage. Two new ensembles have commenced this year to help cater for the talents of our younger students.

Firstly, the Primary School Choir and secondly, the Year 7 and 8 Choir with band. Both ensembles have opportunities to perform during either Term 3 or 4. It is very encouraging to see so many students wanting to be involved in these co-curricular groups.

While most performances have been a part of the NCEA program in 2021, there have been a few students who have been involved in special events throughout the first semester. Thank you to Kaeli and Asher Harkness, Asher Shaffett and Emilie Wallbank for performing at the Easter Assembly and to Caera Lynch and Ethan Binnie for their performance at the Community Prayer and Worship Evening.

A large number of our students from across both Junior and Senior campuses are involved in the Arts Showcase being held next term. This evening will showcase our talented students and celebratee of their God-given gifts.

Matthew 5 v 14-15

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
