Leadership and Service in the Primary School

Primary Leadership

At the start of the year, the Year 6 Kereru’s got an opportunity to use their leadership roles. The roles are Peace Makers, Sports Leaders, ICT Leaders, Librarians, Road Patrol and House Leaders. Next, the Kakapos got their chance to show their leadership skills. In the coming weeks, the Falcons will be our Primary leaders.

But just because you don't have a badge, that does not mean that you are not a leader to God. The main highlight this year was attending MERC – the Marine Education Recreation Centre.

We learned that to achieve any goal, we need each other. Naku te Rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te iwi: “With your basket and my basket, the people will thrive”. When Moses had to hold his staff above his head in the battle of the Israelites, Aaron and Hur helped him when his arms were tired by holding his staff. The Israelites won the battle. This proves that even Moses needed help, and we need help from God and one another.

The main challenge so far this year has been facing COVID-19 and lockdown. We are truly blessed that we live in a safe country, though this still forced us to change our ways of leadership. When we came back to school in Term 2, we had to get back into the rhythm. Our teachers were there to support us every step of the way. They encouraged us to keep moving forward in our learning. But we could have never done this without the Lord... and of course the Year 5 leaders! When we had overflowing lunch orders, the Year 5 leaders were always there to lighten the load. When we had huge lines for sports gear, the Year 5 leaders were there to support us. The Year 5 leaders were amazing at helping out and doing their jobs. They were there every step of the way with us. We are looking forward to seeing them serve in the Year 6 leadership roles next year.

Let God guide you

Every day we learn new things

Admiring God and His character

Determined to help at school

Embracing Jesus’ name

Respecting one another

Storing God’s word in our hearts

Helping others

Persevering through our learning

Primary Service

Year 5 students at the Junior Campus have embarked on many service-related roles throughout the year.

Each child in Year 5 has a 13-week opportunity to serve intentionally in a key area. Part of this role is supporting the Year 6’s in their leadership roles, as well as taking on light duties around the school in which they practice good stewardship.

Some of the roles include:

Maintaining the locker areas

Oversight of the sandpit area

Working with younger classes to support their reading

Keeping studio shelves and spaces tidy

Sweeping and tidying outside environments

Keeping paper supplies stocked up for the photocopiers

Supporting the teachers by collecting and returning cups to the staffroom to be washed

Though these jobs may seem menial, when we have willing students who serve in these areas, the positive difference and support is significant! These Year 5’s are learning that their small part makes a big difference and as we learn in the Bible, it takes the whole body working together to be the best we can be.

If we can capture an understanding of the team approach through service, we serve the whole, and are a blessing to our wider community.
