A Focus on Co-Curricular

I firmly believe that every child needs to achieve success regularly. For some, achievement happens in the classroom. For others, their gifting manifests in different ways, such as on a football pitch or a stage.

Some parents dismiss areas such as sport and the arts and question how these areas will get their child gainfully employed in the future. I always push back with the argument that employers are not looking for brains on sticks. Instead, they are looking for well-rounded people with a personality, with experience leading or being part of a team, who are creative and agile in their thinking and who can relate to their employees. In short, the skills required include resilience, emotional intelligence, and values. All these are developed and practised during sport, the arts, leadership, service and missions.

At KingsWay, we see every facet of school life as an opportunity to achieve our mission statement and the aforementioned key competencies. Students are also encouraged to see areas such as sport as an extension of their Christian faith and witness. At KingsWay, we urge coaches and managers to maximise the opportunities for responsive discipleship. Christian teaching and learning is holistic and not reserved for a 20-minute devotional lesson or Biblical Studies. Some of my greatest discipleship moments afforded to me came from the side of a hockey pitch, and I count it a privilege that my children were impacted by godly men and woman while following their passions.

The leadership of KingsWay is committed to growing the school’s capacity to offer a broader range of opportunities and improve our capability in these areas. The 2030 Strategic Growth and Development Plan outlines several initiatives that the school endeavours to implement in the next few years to outwork our vision for these areas of the curriculum. I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who faithfully engage with our co-curricular programme. I also want to encourage those with artistic flair to step up as we take the bold step of ramping up our co-curricular arts programme in 2021.

Please can I use this opportunity to urge everyone to continue to embrace our co-curricular programme, and to sacrifice the time and effort that comes with this decision. It is not necessarily about becoming the next Black Stick or Silver Fern but is formational in achieving our vision for a KingsWay graduate.

I look forward to witnessing the continued success and expansion of this vital area of the curriculum.

God bless,
