Marine Discovery

Students discover the importance of preserving marine life. A visit from the University of Auckland Marine Discovery Centre.

Marine scientists from the University of Auckland Marine Discovery Centre came to KingsWay to talk to Year 12 students about the marine environment. Topics included the problems associated with the marine environment such as plastic, ocean acidification and the importance of maintaining and extending marine reserves. The team brought with them marine organisms, with permission from Goat Island Marine Reserve, and students were able to carry out investigations onsite to understand how the ocean becomes acidic over time with global emissions.

More recently, the same students completed an open water scuba course at Goat Island. Combined with this week's Marine Discovery Centre visit, the students have a deeper understanding of how and why we need to protect our beautiful marine New Zealand coastline.
