Sport Under COVID-19 by KingsWay School

Whilst lockdown was not ideal, there were positives to be gained for sport under COVID-19.

During lockdown the Sporting Organisation in New Zealand came together to make a series of Home Advantage videos with ideas of drills to do at home. These were  uploaded to the Kingsway School Sport Facebook page every couple of days. Fitness organisations ran sessions free of charge for everyone to do at home and great resources were shared freely by SportsNZ for players from grassroots to elite levels. Along with family walks and bike rides, senior students made videos to give our younger students ideas on how to train during lockdown, and the KWS Sports Council ran a fun lockdown challenge on our Sport Facebook page.

Now that school is back, it’s good to see that Sport NZ and local sporting organisations have been working together in getting sport back up and running. As with everything there are challenges that have been caused by COVID with the start of the seasons being delayed, resulting in a shorter playing season, and the requirement of having to contract trace spectators or having no spectators at all. This has also caused more work administratively.

Whilst we continue to wait for confirmation of start dates for organised sports, the school Sports Department has organised lunchtime sports competitions for Middle School in the form of 3v3 Basketball. Senior School have had a competition for Fast Five Netball and 6 vs 6 Football. Middle School basketball teams join together on a Monday lunchtime for scrimmages in preparation for games. Please check out the photographs for these fun activities on our Kingsway School Sport Facebook page.
