Welcome to Kaitaiki Corner! This is a new section of our newsletter where we will keep you up-to-date about exciting Enviro initiatives we have been doing at KSS, and share with you how we have been getting involved in nature and caring for our planet šŸŒŽ This week, Tōtara will be starting us off!

Tōtaraā€™s Week in the Orchard

Last week, Whaea Emmaā€™s whānau group walked to the sprawling orchard for two reasons. Firstly, to write about the giant pumpkin patch, and secondly to learn about living things for science.

On Wednesday, Whaea Emmaā€™s whānau group went to the orchard to write a creative piece about the pumpkin patch that took over the world. When we got back we brain-stormed as a group our ideas and then wrote them down. I wrote about an epic battle between humans and the pumpkins.

On Friday we did a science lesson. We went to the orchard to take photos of living things. I took photos of leaves, flowers and bees. We walked back to class and we talked about what we learned. I learnt about what is a living thing. It was fun!

Last week when the sun was out and there were no clouds to be seen, Whaea Emmaā€™s group were getting their hats and going to the overgrown orchard so we could write our creative stories. In the orchard, we were gathering all of our great ideas. I was bursting with excitement. When we got to write our story I was talking to no one. I already had a million ideas, writing non-stop when it was my turn. I was super excited. I was telling Whaea Emma all of my amazing ideas and writing them down frantically!

Litter-Free Lunch Inspo!

We are absolutely loving all of the single-use plastic-free lunches at KSS this year! From beeswax wraps to reuseable containers, it is fantastic to see so many tamariki taking ownership of their lunches and saying no to litter. Each week we will feature a litter-free superstar lunchbox to help inspire whānau. We loved this weeksā€™ lunchbox with lots of little compartments that not even one container was needed - awesome mahi, Pearl!
