Secondary Schools XC MTB Racing

Craig Allchurch —

One of our senior students, Mason, has achieved some incredible results on his bike in recent times.

Every Wednesday afternoon for the last four weeks I have been going to Secondary Schools XC MTB racing at the Halswell Quarry. Sometimes I even get to leave school early! The four-week series finishes with Canterbury Champs racing. After a horrible start in the Canterbury Champs race, I had to settle into my riding and think about my strategy. Knowing that I was in fourth place on the second of two laps I knew I had to ride a lot harder. I was trying so hard it felt like I was about to throw up but I held it together and thanks to Dad's encouragement I kept going. It was worth it because I managed to catch and overtake on the final uphill. Coming out of the trees gasping for air, I saw the finish line and knew the race was almost over. Crossing the finish line in 3rd place was a great feeling. I am looking forward to Nationals in October but I need to do some more training.
