From the Tumuaki's Table - Term 2, Week 2

Mike Molloy —

A very warm welcome back into another exciting term of learning. A special welcome to our new whānau that joined us this term.

As you know we enjoyed welcoming all of our new whānau at the Mihi Whakatau last Monday. This ceremony celebrates new families joining our Kura - our KSS whānau. A mihi whakatau is a greeting where you move from Manuhiri (guests) to Tangata Whenua - whānau of the school. The children love receiving their bracelets that help empower them with the 5 C’s of care, connectioncourage, curiosity, and creativity.

KSS is blessed with such diversity of culture. It is one of our strengths and thanks to our Cultural Connections parent group we are always looking for opportunities to strengthen what we do. We have an enthusiastic group of parents that are helping us plan cultural events and activities that help the children understand and respect each other. This group is open to any interested parents. It is a great opportunity to teach us about your culture and how we can best meet your child's needs.

Last week the annual Māori Whānau Hui was held for all parents interested in Māori education. As a school, we recognise and celebrate the place of Māori as tangata whenua in Aotearoa New Zealand. We want Māori children to be proud of who they are as Māori learners and for all Māori learners to be successful. As a multicultural nation, we want all children to respect and understand all cultures.

The Friends of the School have been busy this year with many fundraising and fun activities. This is another fantastic opportunity for parents to have a positive impact on the school.

I do often say: what you put in you get back out!
