From the Tumauaki's Table - Term 2, Week 9

Mike Molloy —

Life returns to normal... but who wants to be normal?

What a relief to have no more sign-in sheets, hand sanitiser at the gate and social distancing from those we know. The return of a friendly handshake, a coffee out, and a warm embrace from our friends means we reconnect with others and it has an uplifting effect on our spirits.

As everyone 'normalises' I think we shouldn't! School to us at KSS is a fun, engaging, and personalised place. Our direction comes straight from the children's interests and wonders about the world. Yes, we do need to follow the New Zealand Curriculum and ensure we teach children to read, write and be numerate too. As a principal, I particularly love the ideas that come directly from students.

Now that we are back the children are taking over their school once again! KSS Battle of the Bikes mountain bike race is being organised by four keen students, I hear whispers of a KSS has Got Talent from Jiya, Rubbish Free Lunches from the Earthikea group and rumours of the another Disco emerging. A group of leaders are also organising a mufti day to support the Christchurch City Mission and parents are asking for another ski trip. Well, why not!

You will notice to there are many opportunities coming up for parents to chat with teachers about what we are doing, how we are going and how we can do things better. Recently we sent home information about BYOD (Bring Your Own Devices) for Y5 - 8 students, there is a Māori Education Hui this term and a Health and Sexuality Education session being planned for next term. It was great to hear that the Friends of School Team are back in action too!

My final message is simple, this is your school so make the most of every opportunity you have to be part of it!
