Making 'Choices' at Kelston Boys' High Provision

Ram Prakash - Provision Lead Teacher —

At Kelston Boys' High School Provision, we embrace our core learner value of 'choose' this term; it's inspiring to see how our learners actively engage with their education, making thoughtful choices that reflect their passions and aspirations. We explore the various dimensions of choice our students have navigated this term and how our dedicated staff have supported them.

Our senior ākonga demonstrated remarkable agency in selecting subjects that align with their interests and future goals. Whether in the sciences, NZSL or engaging in creative arts, students have taken ownership of their education. Students gravitate toward electives such as digital technology, graphic design, and hard materials, illustrating a genuine enthusiasm for areas where they can see potential future jobs.

The spirit of exploration has been strong this term, with many students eager to step outside their comfort zones and try something new. Whether participating in a theatre performance, participating in community garden projects, or playing sports for the school team, our learners have embraced opportunities that challenge them and broaden their horizons.

Our career advisors have been instrumental in providing guidance and support as students navigate their choice of courses for future employment. They have encouraged learners to explore their interests and talents more deeply, offering workshops, mentorship, and tailored resources to help students make informed decisions. For example, by visiting Massey Building Academy for a carpentry course, Arts teachers have nurtured creativity by offering various mediums and techniques, encouraging students to find their unique artistic expression and visiting various galleries in the city.
