NZSL Day School in Wellington
The Wellington NZSL Day School (hub) has been privileged to learn from four Deaf educators and one hearing educator this year.
Our group of 20 students includes Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing ākonga (siblings of a deaf child). This year we've enjoyed having Deaf visitors from around Aotearoa and Australia visiting our hub.
Throughout the year, we've learnt some important Deaf history and explored how some NZSL signs can be used for the same thing. We compared some pre-1979 signs with today's NZSL and observed how some signs have changed and some have remained the same, especially with aspects of play and numbers.
Our students have also experimented with the culturally Deaf value of storytelling.
We're looking forward to our end of year celebration with students, whānau, and families from the Deaf community. This year we're all coming together to see a show called 'Party Pigs' by the Little Dog Barking Theatre Company which includes a puppeteer who will use NZSL!
