Kelston Girls College Bilingual Deaf Provision
This year, we had 10 students at our provision. We have had some challenging (but positive) and unusual situations this year - working at home online for a big part of our year, gaining NCEA credits, welcoming new staff, entering the Talent Quest competition - to name but a few. In each case, the students rose to the occasion.
In this article, we have recorded a few of our significant achievements. However, all achievements - no matter how large or small - are very special. Unfortunately, our photos are limited, due to the lockdown.
This year our hospitality students got to work in the famous NZ Food & Wine school commercial kitchens alongside some very experienced chefs. One of these chefs was the famous Peter Gorden.
One of our Yr12 students worked alongside Rutherford College students who are completing the tertiary component of the Mahi-a-Toi academy. The whakaaro behind this was to allow the students to express their Te Ao Māori concepts through the Arts.
Our junior students started the year learning about ‘Safe Food Handling Practices’ and extending their cooking skills. They began to create a recipe book using recipes from their practical cooking lessons. Here at the provision we also held our very own Masterchef competition.
This year we were very proud to have two of our students enter the KGC Talent Quest, dance and drums. It was exciting to learn that both of them were selected for the finals. However, due to COVID we were unable to complete this competition.
The year 2021 has been very different (spending a proportion of our time in lockdown). It has been a year that has taught us to be resilient, the importance of gratitude, and appreciating the time we have with the people that surround us. We are proud of how our students have engaged with so many activities and represented our school in different ways. They certainly have made us proud to have worked alongside them.
