Fun at the Maritime Museum Auckland! North Shore Outreach Team KIT Day
Developing friendships and new learning experiences. We love KIT days!
Boy, Auckland really did turn on the weather for our KIT Day!!!
Towards the end of Term 1, the North Shore Outreach team and the Oteha Valley Provision were lucky enough to spend our KIT day at the Maritime Museum, Auckland. Have you ever been there? If not, you should!
On this day we set sail for an hour-long cruise on Auckland’s harbour. We traveled on the heritage scow, TED ASHBY. For some of us, this was our first time sailing. Onboard, we learned how to hoist the sails and worked in teams to do so. We kept our eyes peeled for fish as we splashed through the waves. We were hoping to see a clean ocean beneath us.
When back on the shore, we lay on our tummies and observed the different sea life that lives under the museum. We were shown the different types of rubbish that can be found in our oceans. There are so many different sea animals in our harbour and we want to help protect them.
This was an action-packed morning, but the excitement didn’t end there. We also witnessed the cannon being fired. It made such a loud BANG! We counted down from ten and shouted, “Fire!”
As America’s Cup had just ended, this was a very timely trip. Before leaving for the day we had free time to explore the museum and read all about Sir Peter Blake. He was a famous New Zealand yachtsman. This KIT day had been a long time coming with all the lockdown disruptions in Auckland. We were so grateful to see our friends again and to learn the importance of keeping our oceans clean.
