With seven students all on their own paths towards independence, this year has been filled with learning, successes, emotions and now lots of fond memories.

No day is the same within this provision, which is much like the students. A great mix of personalities, their list of achievements are constantly increasing.

Not ones to sit still, over half of the group are now behind the wheel! Lilly Neale was successful in obtaining her full Drivers Licence, Jorja Steele now has her Restricted and Najma Othman and Henry Tangiwai-Scott both have their Learner’s. They are all quite literally on the road to freedom!

If you prefer a slightly more rustic mode of travel, speak to Lachie Cowie who has been taking the reins on his National Trade Academy Equestrian course. Learning everything horse related, from the skills needed to work as a stable hand and groom, to also improving his own riding ability.

Back to having two feet on the ground, we glide over to Emma Takitaki and Jordan Payne, who have graced the stage this year as part of Hagley College performances. Emma dazzled in her Dance showcase and Jordan acted her heart out in ‘Macbeth’. There was definitely no case of stage fright on either side, as Emma was involved in four separate ensembles on the night and Jordan took on three different characters. A great deal of commitment and dedication was demonstrated by both of the students from start to finish.

2020 was also a year of many firsts. Najma’s experienced going on a boat for the first time ever during her ESOL class trip to Akaroa, Lilly voted for the first time during the General Election and Henry was our first injured party, by breaking his wrist during a Rugby game! A keen sportsman, he also deservedly was chosen and won the Hagley Basketball ‘Coaches Choice’ Award.

Overall, a fantastic year, jam-packed full of laughs, learning and a love for life!
