The value of choice through child-led play

Tina Harrison - Early Years Programme Lead —

Learning through rich play-based experiences

In the Early Years Whānau Centre, we encourage choice through child-led play, set around a morning routine of music, kai, playtime and group story time. Through play-based learning, we follow the interests and choices of our tamariki, delving into their world and enriching their engagement and learning experiences with a strong focus on language in NZSL, Te Reo Māori and English.

Commenting on our preschoolers' play and extending their interactions with language shows them how much we value the mahi they are engaged in and their choices. After all, play is their work! Supporting with rich language extends their vocabulary and understanding of new concepts such as Theory of Mind and supports their sense of well-being and belonging in the Early Years Whānau Centre.
