Hillmorton High School's Positive Beginning and Belonging
Deaf and hearing students attend a three-day camp where they participate in fun adventures and build friendships with both Deaf and hearing staff.
We went to Orton Bradley Park, where we slept in tents. It has a rich history; before Deaf Educational was established, six Deaf children lived on that farm in the 1880s. We participated in fun adventures like high ropes, mountain biking, and water activities such as jumping off rocks and kayaking, and we played torch games at night - hiding and seeking in the bush. We also set up shelters, cooked pancakes on outdoor gas stoves, went bushwalking to the Big Rock, played volleyball, passed balls, and socialised outdoors all day. It was an excellent way to connect with Hillmorton staff, hearing students, and build friendships at camp, continuing the camaraderie at school being the primary goal.
