Kelston Boys' Provision Back in Action

Kelston Boys Provision Team —

It was a relief for our students to come back to school and do teaching and learning in person throughout 2022.

This year we welcomed two new students and one staff member. In Term 2, D-Sharn joined us as a Year 9 student from Fairfield College and Hsakaw Wah came to us in Year 12 from Massey High School. Gwenn Hebert (Educational Interpreter) joined Kelston Boys' High School (KBHS) Deaf provision to work with our signing students.

During NZSL week, the staff and students helped promote teaching Sign Language in their Whānau class. We also ran a sign language class in the afternoon for staff who wanted to expand their sign language learning.

Most of our students attend mainstream classes and we're proud to say they are doing exceptionally well. All the senior students are working hard consistently to achieve all the credits offered in their chosen subjects this year.

Throughout 2022 our students have been involved in various wider school activities. Zenos Tamihana is playing volleyball and, all biases aside, has a lots of skill, drive, and passion! He practises twice a week after school, through the holidays, and plays on a Friday night as well. He has already played in a few tournaments and our senior students admire his prowess on the court. He currently plays in the premier team, mainly composed of Year 13s.

Callan Waters has been involved in the Youth Theatre Group and has matured into a fine young man after his involvement last term. He also plays junior cricket for KBHS.

In Term 3 we had the pleasure of taking our students to the Auckland War Memorial Museum. The trip's highlight for students and staff was experiencing the simulation of an earthquake during a volcano eruption "at home" in 7 Puia Street, St Heliers, while in the lounge watching the news.

Holden Tangiwai-Spencer and Destyn Coleman-Mensouri expertly completed their wooden side table in Hard Materials Technology.

Fiero Estanislao attended Technotronics, where he had to create his own video game!! Fiero has already achieved his Numeracy, Literacy and University Entrance credits at Level 2.

Hsakaw has been learning NZSL from scratch and is one of the most improved students, even though it was a new language for him. He is most likely to complete NZSL Level 1 this year.
