Shapes, shapes, and more shapes!

Ann McLaughlin - Resource Teacher of the Deaf and Carrie Johnston - Resource Teacher of the Deaf —

"...from the air, the ground sometimes looks like a patchwork quilt..."

Reading this sentence, inspired our Year 7 learner at Gisborne Intermediate to discover more about patchwork - what does it mean if the ground looks like a patchwork quilt?

To help answer this question, our Resource Teacher of the Deaf (RTD) Ann brought in some quilting materials and placed them together to show visually what a patchwork quilt looks like. Ann then taught our learner how to sew hexagonal shapes together by hand to make a cushion - inspired by the ground looking like a patchwork quilt! The story took on a whole new layer of meaning and our learner acquired a wonderful new skill that can become a hobby in her spare time.

Both teacher and student enjoyed this immensely as a highlight of 2022 and the student had a great time showing the end product to her whānau.
