Deaf Students' Leadership Development

Daniel Greenwood, Assistant Head of Enrolled School —

The Enrolled School ran a 2-day leadership workshop for senior students in Auckland.

In the middle of term 4, the Enrolled School ran a two-day leadership workshop in Auckland for 14 DHH students from Years 11+. At the start, the students set 3 personal goals each for the 2 days relating to leadership and then learned what leadership is, from different presentations given by various Ko Taku Reo staff. One presentation was about inspiring leadership, another was leadership styles, and one more was on effective communication.

Activities were facilitated to put theory to practice, including sharing knowledge. Afterwards, they reflected if they had achieved all of their 3 goals, some of them, or not at all. They also had their first overnight stay on Ruaumoko Marae. The residence staff ran some activities in the evening, including residential students who were not taking part in the 2-day workshop.

It was great to see the students having a fantastic learning experience. A big thank to all the staff involved, and to Sport Waitakere for their support. We plan to deliver these workshops again in future.

Some words from some students:
"I learnt a lot, I feel more confident now. I want more workshops like this!"
"Thank you guys for teaching us more deeply about leadership."
"We all need to learn to get new abilities and different kinds of leadership."
