2021 Kelston Intermediate Provision Happenings - what have they been up to?

Gwenn Hebert, Sheila Gibbons, Yvonne Lee —

We were busy this year! We were lucky to have many day trips at the beginning of the year!

In Term 2, we went to Skycity. We went all the way up to the tower and we had to find different landmarks. Some of us were afraid of heights and it was scary. We learned about navigation and using a compass. We talked about all the volcanoes around Auckland. The same afternoon, we went to Mount Eden to see a real volcano - we even got ourselves a McDonald’s treat! We climbed to the top to look at the crater - wow the walk was harder than we thought. The winds were so strong it almost blew us away! We also had to spot landmarks and know if our school was North, South, West or East.

Later in the term, we created an NZSL club at our school to teach our friends the alphabet, fingerspelling words, and names and numbers! They learned fast and now more people want to join! Even teachers!!! We were so happy that our hearing friends wanted to learn our language.

In Term 3, we visited the Auckland Museum. We discovered Māori history, learned how our ancestors navigated to New Zealand, and saw different artifacts that they used to do so. We were so excited to see the museum! Later, we also experienced an earthquake in the Volcano exhibit - we were so shocked at how shaky and scary it was! During our free time, some of us really wanted to see the War exhibition - so glad we did because it was awesome!!!

In Term 4, we were in lockdown. But it did not stop us from learning and having fun in class. We have had many huis with Kelston Primary too. It is nice to see our friends, even if it is only online :)

What a whirlwind year it has been.
