Highlights at Kelston Girls' High School

Tahseen Sultana - Provision Lead Teacher —

This year our students at Kelston Girls' Provision have been engaged in learning, participated in different activities, and represented Ko Taku Reo in many ways.

This year Ko Taku Reo Bilingual Girls’ provision had nine students from Year 9 to 13. All the students have shown a greater commitment towards their learning by attending classes and working through self-directed learning.

Our junior students have shown a positive attitude towards their learning. They are in the bilingual Deaf provision for Mathematics and New Zealand Sign Language. In their mainstream classes they are supported by a Teacher of the Deaf or an interpreter.

Our ākonga have produced many highlights - Liwen is a Year 10 student who has achieved 14 credits at Level 1 with Excellence and 7 credits towards Numeracy at NCEA Level 1. Liwen is an outstanding drummer, and her skills were featured at the Art Showcase. Catherine Moka is a Year 10 student who has also achieved 4 credits towards Numeracy NCEA Level 1.

Senior students worked hard to complete and submit their assignments within the due dates to achieve credits at each level. One senior student has been working hard on their Folio board for Photography. Mea and Sumeya have achieved their literacy credits at NCEA Level 1.

Our students have participated in many school events this year, such as the Matariki celebrations, which included creating a kite where each student represented a star in the Matariki constellation. Our most senior student, Mercedies, was involved in the pōwhiri and produced a video where she told the story of the origin of the stars.

Other highlights included:

  • teaching our mainstream classmates NZSL during NZSL Week
  • a Youth Drama Project which Mea, Sumeya and Seneuefa participated in
  • a Tongan dance performance in the Art Showcase which Mea led
  • participating in kapa haka during Māori Language week
  • a mainstream gardening project which Maia was involved in

We welcomed a new student, Hailey Lewis, in Term 3. Sadly at the end of the year, we will be saying farewell to Mercedies who is finishing Year 13 - we wish Mercedies well.
