Same services, Different names!

Sarah de Heer, Head of Early Years and Service Development —

We have finally taken the step to change the name of our early years services in Auckland and Christchurch, however, we still offer the same amazing services.

When Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ was born in July 2020, the Kelston Preschool and van Asch Early Intervention Centre had to keep their same names, and these were stated on their license. To change the name of a service is a process, and formal documentation has to be sent to the Ministry of Education for them to approve.

So in 2020, we started with a parent consultation in Christchurch to ask them about what our new name could be. It was really important to us that we got parent voice, as they all have such a strong connection to both centres. This was followed with a survey, as we really wanted to try and capture what happened in Christchurch, both in the Early Intervention Centre and with Preschool Residential Courses. This was then followed by a short consultation via Storypark with Auckland parents to see if they were happy with our choices for the Auckland service. The ECE Trust board, made up of parent representatives were also asked about the new names, and we had a resounding "Yes!" for both of them.

So........we would like to now welcome you to the: Ko Taku Reo Early Years Whanau Centre, Christchurch, and Ko Taku Reo Preschool, Auckland!

This does nothing to change the amazing work that is done with DHH preschool children and their families/whanau, and we look forward to sharing more of this with you in future newsletters.
