Choose Science, Choose Curiosity

Helen Urquhart - Teacher of the Deaf —

In term 3, we continued learning about our bodies and how they work. The topic chosen was "Living things", including what makes something living or not living.

We have grouped items as living or non-living using the acronym MRS GREN. Each letter represents a word, and all living things can do the following things.

M = Movement
R = Respiration
S = Sensitivity

G = Growth
R = Reproduction
E = Excretion
N = Nutrition

This has led us to what we are made of, the building blocks of life, Cells! There have been a lot of new concepts, vocabulary, fingerspelling, and signs to learn. We have built our own cells, learnt about their basic structure, labelled them and learnt about different types of cell division. There is so much more we could do. The students have been curious learners with many great questions, thinking about things in a way they haven't done before. Next term, we will move onto a different topic, still focusing on the human body, but they will choose the topic.
