Amazing prices to be had at the Northland KIT Day market!
Market themed KIT Day, at Whangarei Sensory Centre, goes viral!
At the end of Term 2, Northland learners travelled to the new Sensory Centre Offices based at Tikipunga High School, for a market themed KIT Day. Learners were divided into five groups and spent the morning designing and creating products to be sold in the afternoon, at their market stalls.
A group of senior learners worked with Floyd & Lyn to design and make smoothies. Learners needed to choose at least four different fruits and nuts. These were blended with yoghurt & milk; some learners even topped their smoothie off with whipped cream! Yum!
In the kitchen area, Alana, Rebecca, some parents, and teacher aides helped learners to decorate a variety of different shaped biscuits with icing and sprinkles. These were beautifully packaged along with chocolate balls in cellophane and sparkly ribbon.
A group worked with Claire and Nadine in the lecture room, to design and create jewellery. A variety of different coloured, shaped beads was carefully selected and threaded onto the elastic cord to make necklaces & bracelets.
‘Star Struck’ was the name of Jan and Michelle’s market stall, this is where learners weaved and created Matariki stars and decorated recycled plastic milk bottles into fabulous lanterns. Using cardboard and ice block sticks as the base, learners selected different coloured wool to create eye-catching stars!
Another group worked with Penny to make lavender bags. With Penny’s expertise, they practiced sewing techniques and used their fine motor skills to make gorgeous little bags, filled with lavender and rosemary!
In the afternoon, to reinforce our financial literacy focus, learners were given time to spend ten dollars on the items that were made during the day and experience the ‘giving and receiving of money.’
