Adventures in Hamilton Gardens on KIT Day

Waikato Team —

Communication, connection and collaboration: working together to uncover hidden treasures!

Our Waikato Outreach students were excited to see each other again on our Keep In Touch (KIT) Day at Hamilton Gardens. After a quick morning tea they worked in groups to complete a unique treasure hunt.

Hamilton Gardens is unique among New Zealand's botanic gardens. It emphasises different types of garden design, showcasing the cultural meaning and context of gardens over the past 4000 years. Every garden has its own story and hidden secrets. Students explored the history and meaning of each of the gardens while searching for clues. They were also looked for hazards and adopted simple safety practices.

Once the treasure hunt was complete, the students ate lunch and caught up on all their news. Many younger students had a great time playing together in the Destination Playground.

After lunch in the Rogers Rose Garden, students worked in groups to complete an orienteering activity. This involved following instructions relating to position, distance, half turns, and quarter turns. After finding four NZSL sign pictures hidden in the garden, each student was presented with a prize!
