Mainstream Connections at Kelston Intermediate
At our Kelston Intermediate Provision, we're lucky to have a partner school that encourages our students to participate in the activities and opportunities available to mainstream students.
An essential part of the culture is a sense of 'oneness' between our two schools. Every week our learners can join in with a range of classes to fulfil certain aspects of our curriculum.
They do PE and also a technology rotation with our regular buddy class, Room 15. In the first half of the year, students made lots of yummy recipes and learnt all about food safety in Food Tech with Whaea Natalie. Next was Hard Materials with Mr Boyd, who helped students make a wooden toy. The year finished with Art with Whaea Dot where everyone had fun learning to create stencils.
Another feature of life at Kelston Intermediate is To Our Potential Studies (TOPS), which runsevery Monday; these are optional classes that run simultaneously. Tere and Diamond chose to learn about tuktuku panels to begin with and then joined Frank the following term for Kaitiakitanga with Matua John in the school garden. The provision also got to host a TOPS class with Whaea Yvonne and Wendy Orellana teaching mainstream students NZSL basics.
Another favourite weekly activity is Kiwi Can with Matua BJ's class. This is an energy-packed primary school programme which teaches values like integrity and respect, and helps build resilience through fun-filled learning. We also enjoyed sharing about sign language and Deaf Culture in NZSL week.
In our sporting endeavours, Frank ran in the Western Zones Cross Country and was part of the basketball tournament as a part of the mainstream team.
One of the biggest highlights of 2022 came in Term 4 when our Provision and mainstream students went together to an NZSL supported production of The Whale Rider, put on by the Tim Bray Theatre Company, complete with a backstage tour!
