NZSL Tutors

Paul Buzzard - NZSL Tutor Lead —

I am pleased to see our NZSL Tutor team growing with many old and new faces on board this year. We have an exciting announcement, we have three new NZSL Tutors Co-Leading in North, Central and South with new visions and services in 2022. Congratulations to Pixie Naeme, Janet Stokes and Jenna Holland.

We celebrated our NZSL Week along with Deaf Aotearoa. It was terrific to see our Ko Taku Reo staff join us for our NZSL Taster class each morning tea and lunchtime. Our Digital Resource team created awesome posters with QR codes, when scanned showed NZSL video translating a phrase from English to NZSL, the staff went into a draw to win prizes such as SLICNZ NZSL cards to use in the classroom.

What a rollercoaster 2021 has been for us all, our second lockdown, this time we were familiar with what to do and quickly adapted from face to face to teaching online through Zoom and Google Meet with our classroom students and RTDs. Many of our NZSL Tutors have been working at the Provisions, Day School, Beacon School, Outreach, Early Years Whānau Centre, Preschool Courses, Assessments and Ko Taku Reo staff to support our NZSL to widespread in Aotearoa.

NZSL@School is continuing to support our CESWs to have NZSL Tutor and NZSL accessible support to be able to provide for our students to be able to gain their voice and participate in the classroom.
Ka Pai to their hard work and commitments.

We sadly farewell to some of our NZSL Tutors who are taking up different roles:

  • Meghan Coppage - Dunedin
  • Miggy Javier - Christchurch
  • Karla Smith - Auckland
  • Alana Best - Whangarei

Congratulations on your new roles.

We would like to say a big farewell to our long-time staff member, Ann Croy who has been working here for 25 years who during this time has had several roles. Ann was our first Deaf teacher at van Asch Deaf Education Centre to develop a bilingual language classroom, Resource Teacher of the Deaf, NZSL Tutor Lead for Christchurch NZSL, and many other roles. We wish her all the best with her new adventure in Taranaki.

Thank you to Becky West, Matthew Flynn and all NZSL signers for their hard work in developing NZSL resources such as PM books and the wonderful NZSL videos on Turi TV.

Thank you to all NZSL Tutors who help us with our outcomes this year and to Ko Taku Reo who continues to provide accessible services.

Wishing you a good year of health and happiness for 2022.
