Special Guest visitor at KDEC

Lisa Sharman —

On Monday 10th September we were very fortunate to have a visitor come and talk to us. This person Kelly Wilson is an award-winning photographer and designer. She is the bestselling author of four biographical non-fiction books, For the Love of Horses, Stallion Challenges, Mustang Ride and Saving the Snowy Brumbies, a children's picture book Ranger the Kaimanawa Stallion and a junior chapter book series Showtym Adventures. With her sisters Vicki and Amanda, Kelly has starred in the hit-rating TV series, Keeping up with the Kaimanawas, following their work taming New Zealand's wild Kaimanawa horses, and travelled to America and Australia to rescue and tame wild horses.

The students and staff at KDEC enjoyed listening to her stories and were amazed with her work she does for wild horses.

The students have been very busy getting out and about last week. They visited the Odyssey Sensory Maze, Auckland Art Gallery, Ice skating and Tree Adventures.

It was wonderful to see the students getting out there and having a go. A lot of these activities involve students stepping outside their comfort zone. For some of the students it was their first time and it was great to see them develop confidences.

They all had a great time and enjoyed the outing. This was also fantastic to see students helping and supporting each other. Great team building!!!

The students also visited Ormiston Junior College and Ormiston Primary Deaf Provisions. A big thank you to Vivita and Kaori for having us. It was the first time for some of our students meeting each other and it was wonderful to see them interacting. The students played a game where they had to talk to someone they never met before and find out some things they like to do. This is great for social and communication skills. It was a short visit but will set up another visit again the future.
