Growing at Ormiston Primary Provision

Theresa McCreight - ‪Assistant Head of Enrolled School —

At Ormiston Primary Provision, our students grow every day.

Languages

New Zealand Sign Language is our first language in the Provision, and we continue to grow in confidence in using it to communicate with our friends, teachers, and visitors. This term, we celebrated NZSL week. We proudly visited some of the classrooms in our Partner School and shared our language with them. It is good because many children come up and say hello to us using NZSL.

Learning Success

We have shared many successes in our learning this term. Daily reading, writing, and math lessons improve our literacy and numeracy skills. We have been learning about Mātariki, the Māori New Year, this term. We have been learning about the significance of the seven Mātariki stars. Mātariki is a time to remember those no longer with us and come together with whānau. We have been doing our pepeha and look forward to sharing these with you.

Identity

We continue to grow our identity and learn more about our Deaf Culture. Our NZSL tutor and teachers help us. We learned more about the history of our language and how it became the official language of New Zealand in 2006. We also share with our friends and teachers the other cultures we belong to: Māori, Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga and the Middle East.

Finally

Our Provision has also grown. This term, we welcomed Sofia and Thomas to the school and Kristal as a new Teacher Aide.
