NZSL at Invercargill's Mīharo Murihiku Polyfest – A Day of Immersion and Celebration!
Invercargill NZSL Immersion Day School participated in the Mīharo Murihiku Polyfest; it was a great day for everyone.
On Thursday, August 29th, 17 students from Invercargill and Southland schools came together for our NZSL Immersion Day, participating in the Miharo Murihiku Polyfest. This special event allowed us to celebrate and showcase our Deaf and Māori cultures through New Zealand Sign Language in song.
The day was filled with excitement and togetherness, enhanced by the enthusiastic support of colleagues, whānau, and students from mainstream schools. A particularly memorable moment occurred when Wallacetown School, our host school, joined us for our final performance of "Pepeha," reflecting the strong bonds we've built.
Another highlight was when James Hargest Junior College, where three of our learners are enrolled, and Waverley Park School, which hosts another three of our learners, performed a tautoko haka to show respect.
We were immensely proud when one of our students, Blake Curry, responded with his own haka. This powerful display highlighted his deep connection to both his Māori and Deaf cultures, as well as to his mainstream school and our NZSL Immersion Day.
The event was a memorable celebration of community and culture and something we look forward to doing again in the future.
