NZSL National Immersion Hui fosters meaningful connections and cultivated mana through immersive experiences.

In a five-day immersive experience, five dedicated students from different parts of Aotearoa, New Zealand, came together at Kelston Auckland for an enriching New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) immersion Hui. The journey proved transformative as we delved into the rich history of Deaf Schools in New Zealand, discovering their invaluable contributions to our vibrant Deaf community.

A particularly touching moment was our visit to the Auckland Deaf Society, where students had the privilege of meeting and interacting with esteemed Senior Citizens of the Deaf Community. This encounter bridged generational gaps, enabling students to connect with individuals who have witnessed the evolution of NZSL in Deaf Education.

The Hui provided a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in the beauty and expressiveness of NZSL, our beloved sign language. Living in the residential space with other students was filled with laughter and camaraderie, fostering an environment conducive to learning and growth.

Tū Kōkiri invited students to join the Master Sign competition. The Hui witnessed the sharing of many stories that left an indelible mark on each student, highlighting the power of community and the significance of preserving our unique Deaf culture and language. Everyone enjoyed the afterschool activities and staying at the Residential Home.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Deaf Education and the Auckland Deaf Society for their unwavering support and enthusiasm, which significantly contributed to the success of this visit. Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate more opportunities to learn, grow, and celebrate the profound Deaf heritage of Aotearoa.
