Creating Lifelong Learners Through Fun and Engagement

Tracy Dahlberg - Provision Lead TeacherOctober 18, 2023

This year, we have worked hard to offer many opportunities to try new activities to develop confident learners.

At Ormiston Primary Provision, we've focused on providing many opportunities for students to develop confidence, resilience, and wellbeing in 2023. The underlying concept at the heart of this learning area has been a Māori philosophy of wellbeing that includes the dimensions taha wairua, taha hinengaro, taha tinana, and taha whānau, each influencing and supporting the others.

We've strived to support students to develop a positive, responsible attitude toward their wellbeing, respect, care, and concern for others and the environment, and a sense of social justice.

Students have engaged in activities to develop resilience and perseverance, including:

  • Counties Manukau Sports Days
  • Fun runs
  • Swimming lessons
  • Rugby / Ripper rugby lessons
  • Yoga
  • Dance
  • Life Education Lessons with Harold.

We have embraced opportunities to foster an understanding of our local history and Māori tikanga through:

  • Waiata and dance
  • Matariki celebrations
  • Rongomai and learning about Māori traditional medicines, including making kawakawa tea
  • Weaving and making manu tukutuku or manu aute
  • Speech making and developing our orality and NZSL skills.

We focused on developing friendships and learning to work as a team. When we work together, we have fun, so we are excited to come to school every day.
